Undergraduate Physics Program

Transfer Plans-Current Semester is Spring or Summer

The standard 8-semester display shows the physics courses required for a physics BS degree. Most of the PY major's courses are taught just once per year. These courses build upon one another, forming a fairly inflexible sequence. This page provides some scheduling options for transferring into the PY major's program, and the estimated time to complete a physics BS degree.

Most likely you have taken, or are currently taking, physics courses such as

  • PY205 or the equivalent at another university (calculus-based course with lab, covering mechanics, sound and heat)
  • PY208 or the equivalent at another university (calculus-based course with lab, covering electricity, magnetism and optics)
  • PY407 or the equivalent at another university (modern physics)

These transfer plans depend on which of these courses you have already completed, or will have completed by the end of the current spring and summer semesters. You should consider a course to be "completed" only if you have fully mastered the material.

No PY courses completed

You should enroll in PY201 in the Fall. Most likely it will take you 4 years beyond the current semester to finish your PY degree.

If you are an internal transfer student, you will need to contact the dup (david_brown@ncsu.edu) to enroll. See the internal transfer requirements. You will need to pass PY201 with a B- or better to enter the PY degree program.

Completed PY205 (or equivalent)

OPTION 1: If it's not too late, take PY208 this Summer. Then take PY203 in the Fall. Most likely it will take you 3 years beyond the current semester to finish your PY degree.

If you are an internal transfer student, you will need to contact the dup (david_brown@ncsu.edu) to enroll in PY203. See the internal transfer requirements. You will need to pass PY203 with a B- or better to enter the PY degree program.

A downside of option 1 is that PY208 will not prepare you for PY203 and the higher level PY courses as well as PY202 or PY208H.

OPTION 2: If it's too late to take PY208 this summer, take PY208H (the honors section of PY208) in the Fall. Take no (core) PY courses in the Spring, and take PY203 the following Fall. Most likely it will take you 4 years beyond the current semester to finish your PY degree.

If you are an internal transfer student, you might need to contact the dup (david_brown@ncsu.edu) to enroll. See the internal transfer requirements. You will need to pass PY208H with a B- or better to enter the PY degree program.

OPTION 3: If it's too late to take PY208 this summer, take no (core) PY courses in the Fall. Take PY202 the following Spring semester. Most likely it will take you 4 years beyond the current semester to finish your PY degree.

If you are an internal transfer student, you will need to contact the dup (david_brown@ncsu.edu) to enroll. See the internal transfer requirements. You will need to pass PY202 with a B- or better to enter the PY degree program.

A downside of option 3 is that the decision to allow you into the PY degree program will not take place for more than 1 year.

OPTION 4: If it's too late to take PY208 this summer, take PY208H (the honors section of PY208) in the Fall. Take PY411 and PY407 in the Spring. You will need to take the PY203 lab the following Fall semester. Most likely it will take you 3 years beyond the current semester to finish your PY degree.

If you are an internal transfer student, you might need to contact the dup (david_brown@ncsu.edu) to enroll. See the internal transfer requirements. You will need to pass PY208H with a B- or better to enter the PY degree program.

A downside of option 4 is that PY411 is a very difficult course. Most students do not pass PY411 unless they have the experience that comes from completing (and mastering) PY203.

Completed PY205/208 (or equivalent)

You should enroll in PY203 in the Fall. Most likely it will take you 3 years beyond the current semester to finish your PY degree.

If you are an internal transfer student, you will need to contact the dup (david_brown@ncsu.edu) to enroll. See the internal transfer requirements. You will need to pass PY203 with a B- or better to enter the PY degree program.

Completed PY205/208/407 (or equivalent)

OPTION 1: Take PY203 (lecture and lab) in the Fall.

A downside of option 2 is that your PY407 class will not count towards your physics degree requirements.

OPTION 2: Take PY203 lab in the Fall, and no other (core) PY courses. You will have to wait until the following Spring to take PY411. Most likely it will take you 3 years beyond the current semester to finish your PY degree.

You will need to contact the dup (david_brown@ncsu.edu) to enroll. If you are an internal transfer student, see the internal transfer requirements. You will need to pass PY411 with a B- or better to enter the PY degree program.

A downside of option 2 is that the decision to allow you into the PY degree program will not take place for more than 1 year. Another downside is that PY407 does not prepare you for the higher level physics courses as well as PY203.
