A novel approach to sampling small volumes of fluid by surface plasmon sensing with a gold-coated, tapered optical fiber is described, and a model shows the essential reasons why the probe is successful. These reasons turn out to be rather interesting, since angle of incidence is crucial for surface plasmon sensing, and it is not controlled in a tapered fiber probe.
