Application Process

Priority Deadline for Fall 2017 Application: January 3, 2017

Application to the Graduate Physics Program at North Carolina State University includes completion of six steps

  1. Submission of an Application through Apply Yourself
  2. Pay an application fee
    • For 2017 admission, we will waive the application fee for the first 100 applicants that are American citizens and that have an undergraduate GPA of better than 3.0 . If you wish to use this waiver
      • Select pay by check in the Apply Yourself system
      • Send an email to py-grad-program@ncsu.edu that you have submitted the application. We will then pay the fee for you without any further steps required from you.
    • $75 for American citizens that do not meet the criterion above, or after the quota has been filled.
    • $85 for all others.
  3. Submission of certified undergraduate transcripts
Certified Undergraduate Transcripts must be sent directly from the undergraduate institution to the NC State Graduate School. Transcripts must be received from all undergraduate institutions that the applicant attended.
  4. Letters of recommendation
Three Letters of Recommendation must be included in a complete application. Prospective students should request letters from qualified persons who are able to judge that prospective student's ability to succeed in graduate school. These can be submitted electronically via Apply Yourself or via hardcopy to the Physics Department Graduate Office.
  5. Graduate Record Exam (GRE) test scores
Applicants should arrange to have Graduate Record Examination test scores sent to the NC State Graduate School. In special circumstances, the Physics Admission Committee may relax this requirement if requested to do so. Candidates with complete test scores (including the Physics subject test) generally have an increased likelihood of acceptance into the graduate program. The Physics subject test is strongly recommended.

Demonstration of English Language Proficiency may be done through any one of the following
    • Citizenship in the USA or another English-speaking country such as Canada, India, Australia, Great Britain, South Africa, etc.
