Community Outreach

The Society of Physics Students is a non-profit organization and is supported by the time and effort of its members and the community. In light of this we give back to the Raleigh community in any way that we can. In the past we have provided physics demonstration shows to children and their families, participated in science fairs at various elementary schools in the Raleigh area, helped host the NCSU Department of Physics Astronomy Nights at the Reedy Creek Observatory, and more. We plan to continue to host events that raise awareness of both SPS and the sciences while giving back to the Raleigh community. If you are interested in having SPS participate in your event please contact David Jones (adjones8@ncsu.edu).

Raleigh Charter High School - September 21st and 28th, 2012

S.P.S volunteered at one of the STEM events at Raleigh Charter High School. Over the course of two Fridays, the SPS set out to increase the motivation and the excitement that students have for the field of physics. We divided up into two different rooms; one for Newtonian Mechanics and one for Electromagnetism. Throughout the day, groups of 10th graders would come in for a block of time. We would do a motivating demonstration to get them used to the atmosphere, then would walk through the room explaining how any number of experiments worked. We would encourage the students to do the experiments themselves, and get them to make a hypothesis about what was going to happen, then an deduction about what happened once they did the experiment. The relaxed, open atmosphere allowed it to be enjoyable for both SPS volunteers and students, and for open dialogues to occur.

Wiley Elementary School "Imagine if..." - March 15th, 2012

The Society of Physics Students volunteered at an event hosted by Wiley Elementary School. We presented an "Imagine if..." scenario to eager children and their families. We also presented a poster and brought hands on demonstrations for viewers of all ages to enjoy.

Washington Magnet Elementary School Science Night - February 2nd, 2012

Every Spring the Society of Physics Students attends the Washington Magnet Elementary School's Science Night and participates in the events of the night. We bring demonstrations for various fields of Physics to show to children and families of the school. We bring such things as a Tesla Coil, a Van der Graff Generator, liquid nitrogen demonstrations and much more. Both parents and children enjoy this event, as do the members of SPS.
