Minutes

 for the

7th Annual Spring Meeting

Forsyth Technical Community College

Winston-Salem, NC

March 16, 2002

1.     Roll Call:  McAllister, Wetli, Kolena, Haskell, Tiwari, Stone, Hubisz, Ramakrishnan, plus 63 other members.

2.     The Minutes of the Fall 2001 Meeting at Carteret Community College were accepted as presented on a motion from Ramakrishnan, seconded by Wessell.

3.     The Treasurer’s Report was accepted as presented on a motion from D’Arruda, seconded by D. Clark.

4.     Report from the High School Representative: John Kolena mentioned a workshop for High School teachers on July 22, 2002, in the Cape Fear area.  Contact John by e-mail for further information.

5.     Report from the Four-Year College/University Representative: Rajive Tiwari pointed out that the listserv was now active.

6.     Report from the Two-Year College Representative, Chuck Stone reported that 12 TYC folks met last evening and discussed ways to get more national AAPT members from the section, incentives for getting first-timers, putting together a guest speaker list [information was later sent out to the NCS-AAPT listserv members], and encouraging nominations for the undergraduate student award.

7.     Report from the Section Representative: Hugh Haskell reported that there was not much to report as there are now frequent e-mail blasts from the national AAPT.  Members were encouraged to fill out the survey on the listserv.

8.     Report of the Awards Committee: Hugh Haskell said that there was nothing to report.

9.     New Business

a.     Discussion on offering Lifetime Dues at $100.  Passed unanimously that we make this offer to members.  For each year paid in advance or each year in arrears this amount will be increased or decreased.

b.     Discussion on meeting with SESAPS in Wilmington in November 2003.  It was agreed that we should proceed with discussions even though we would be going East rather than West.

c.     Discussion on including the health sciences group’s meeting in Asheville.  They appear to be a bit disorganized and seem to make decisions at the last minute.  [I tried to get them to meet with us at UNC – Asheville, but they got confused with their change in officers and are meeting elsewhere in Asheville.]

d.      Other Reports or announcements.  The next meeting will be held in Asheville on November 1-2, 2002, at UNC – Asheville and will be a joint meeting with SACS-AAPT and the SPS.  Chuck Bennett and Michael Ruiz will be our co-hosts.  There were no other announcements.

e.     Election of Vice-President and High School Representative.  Bo Wessell was elected Vice-President and Terri McMurray was elected High School Representative.

f.       Further business?  There was a free-ranging discussion, but nothing that needed resolution.

10.                        Drawing for door prizes.  Our sponsors provided many items for the drawing or which we are very pleased.  The full report of the meeting was published in the “Announcer” and is on our web site.

11.                        Wessell moved adjournment and no one objected.
