Minutes for the 6th Annual Spring Meeting

North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics

Durham NC

1.                  Roll Call:  Wetli, Kolena, Bennett, Haskell, Ramakrishnan, Tiwari, Hubisz, McAlexander, Briggs, and approximately 40 members.

2.                  The Minutes of the Fall 2000 Meeting at Spartanburg were unanimously approved.

3.                  The Treasurer’s Report.  We have a balance of $2491.07 in an Interest-bearing chequing account at BB&T and a CD valued at $1093.51.  We contributed $100 to SACS for the joint meeting mailing.  We have some books and AAPT caps for sale that represent resources.  Members were reminded that if their mailing label does not read “2001” then they are behind in their dues.  We have no debts.  The report was approved unanimously.

4.                  Report from the High School Representative, John Kolena.  The group is trying for more cohesion by keeping in contact by e-mail.

5.                  Report from the Four-Year College/University Representative, Rajive Tiwari.  The group had at least one mailing and is attempting to keep in contact through e-mail and will try to set up a listserv.

6.                  FYC/U proposal for student award, Rajive Tiwari.  The proposal was passed unanimously on reading with a few suggestions for criteria to be included.  The award will begin to be offered in the Fall 2001.

7.                  Report from the Two-Year College Representative, Aaron McAlexander.  Approximately ten TYC folks showed up for a meeting Friday evening.  The main discussion topic was the requirement of 18 hours of credit in physics for community college teachers and no such requirement for university teachers.  College transfer credit was also discussed.

8.                  Report from the Section Representative, Hugh Haskell.  There was some discussion of the worth of getting stronger ties with the national AAPT and the setting up of a Center for Physics Resource materials.  Loren Winters photography and Dave Wall’s proposed videotape series of famous demonstrators were thought to be good candidates for such a resource.  The report is essentially that published in the recent “Announcer” and a reminder about the Modeling Workshops.

9.                  Report of the Awards Committee, Hugh Haskell.  No additional material.

10.       Report from Prabha Ramakrishnan on the Fall Meeting at Carteret CC on October 12-13, 2001.  A brief description of what to expect at the Fall 2001 Meeting was presented.

11.       Other Reports or announcements.  The deaths of Arnold Arons and the wives of Tony French (Naomi) and Rod Grant (Sue) were announced with deep regret.  Members were reminded of the various awards that we make for best papers and asked to nominate papers by bringing them to the attention of a board member.  Members were also reminded of the items for sale at large discounts.  [Note added: Tom Tretter won the award for the Best Pedagogical Paper and will receive $150 toward expenses to present a similar paper at a national meeting, and Chuck Olbert & Chris Clearfield of NCSSM shared a $100 prize for the Best Undergraduate Paper.]

12.      Election of Vice-President and Two-Year College Representative.  Aaron Titus was elected Vice-President and Chuck Stone was elected Two-Year College representative.

13.      Drawing for door prizes.  Several prizes donated by our sponsors were distributed to holders of winning tickets.

14.              Adjourn.
