(Note:
A brief description of the highlights of the meeting appeared in the
Announcer 30 (2) 23-24 (2000). Also a note relating to Karl Mamola's
appointment as editor of The Physics Teacher and of his replacement
as Section Representative by Hugh Haskell appeared in the Announcer
30 (3) 63-63 (2000).)
1. Roll
Call: Haskell, Wetli, Bennett, Briggs, Hubisz, Kolena, McAlexander,
plus about 35 members. Mamola (excused absence)
2. The
Minutes of the Fall 1999 were accepted as distributed on motions by
Mazurski and Putnam.
3. The
Treasurer's report was accepted as distributed on motions by Kolena
and McAlexander.
4. There
was no report from the High School or Four-Year College/University
representatives. McAlexander reported on the Two-Year College activities
having to do with physics in TYCs, engineering technology and mathematics
for engineers. Rick Swanson is the editor of Vector and any and all
notes of interest should be sent to him. The results of their recent
election were also mentioned.
5. Larry
Cain reported on the facilities statistics with regard to attendance
and encouraged members to tour the campus.
6. Hugh
Haskell presented the Section Representativeās report for Karl Mamola.
Information on deadlines for upcoming national meetings, half-price
one-year memberships, upcoming vote on changes to the national AAPT
Constitution, lifetime memberships (15x one-year dues), putting Physics
Today on-line, and the effort to get contact persons at all colleges
and universities to promote AAPT. The death of Richard Childers was
sadly noted.
7. Hugh
Haskell presented the Awards Committee report. Don Collins won the
award for the best pedagogical paper ($150 towards expenses to give
a similar paper at a national meeting) and Lisa Grable won the award
for the best graduate student paper ($100) at the Fall 1999 Meeting.
Patricia (Patty) R. Blanton won the Walter Connolly Award and was
presented the award by Walter Connolly. Honorable Mention went to
John Brown, R. Noble Dillard, and Teresa McMurray.
8. The
Fall 2000 meeting will be held on October 13-14 at USC-Spartanburg.
Contact person is Edwin (Rudy) Jones. The Spring 2001 Meeting will
be held March 16-17 at the North Carolina School of Science & Mathematics
in Durham.
9. Ballots
that had been previously handed out were counted by Bennett and Briggs
and the results presented: Vice-President - Prabha Ramakrishnan of
Carteret Community College; Secretary-Treasurer - John Hubisz of North
Carolina State University; and Four-Year College/University Representative
- Rajive Tiwari of Belmont Abbey College.
10. Adjournment:
Bo Wessell moved and the meeting adjourned.
