4th Annual Spring Meeting

April 24, 1999

 

1.      Roll Call:  Hubisz, Patty, Haskell, Wetli, Mamola, McAlexander, McMurray, plus about 40 members.

2.      Minutes - Fall 1998 Meeting:  It was moved and seconded that the minutes be accepted as distributed.  Motion passed unanimously.

3.      Treasurer's Report (John Hubisz): Prior to monies deposited in conjunction with the Spring Meeting we have a balance of $3000 plus a $1000 CD that matures in October 1999.

4.      Section Representative, Karl Mamola, announced the untimely passing of Bob Sears, President-Elect of the AAPT.  He also mentioned some cost-cutting proposals that were being proposed nationally, the extension of the half-price AAPT membership offer, and gave dates of upcoming national meetings and some deadlines.  Complete details are in the Minutes.

 

5.  Committee Reports:  The Awards Committee announced the finalists for the Walter C. Connolly Award for Excellence in Pre-College Teaching.  Certificates of nomination were presented to Patricia Blanton of Watauga High School in Boone, R. Noble Dillard of the Northwest School of the Arts in Charlotte, and Terri McMurray of the Career Center, Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools.  The winner, Elizabeth Woolard of WG Enloe High School in Raleigh, received a certificate, a one-year membership in the national AAPT, and a cheque for $300.  Walter C. Connolly made the presentations. 

 

A new award for “Outstanding Service to the Section” to be given occasionally was announced and the first recipient was John Hubisz, Secretary-Treasurer.  The award is to be called the “John L. Hubisz Award” and carries with it a certificate and $500.  President Hugh Haskell presented the award with remarks that were both complimentary and humorous to the delight of the audience.

 

Aaron McAlexander described a successful TYC meeting Friday evening after the ice cream social.

 

6.  Future Meetings: The Fall 1999 Meeting will be held at Appalachian State on October 8-9th, and the contact person will be Trish Allen, allenpe@appstate.edu or the secretary-treasurer.  October 8th will be close to a new moon, which will make a trip to the Dark Sky Observatory a nice field trip.  Cliff Swartz has tentatively agreed to be a guest speaker.  (SACS will have their meeting on October 22-23rd at the College of Charleston featuring demonstrations by Dick and Rae, an astronomical observing party, and free registration for all K-12 teachers.  Contact Fred Watts at wattsf@cofc.edu for further details.)  In the Spring of 2000 we meet at Davidson College (Contact Larry Cain at lacain@davidson.edu for further details.)  In the Fall of 2000 we meet jointly with SACS in South Carolina and in the Spring of 2001 at NCSSM in Durham.

 

7.  Elections:  Elections were held and the results were: John Kolena of NCSSM, Pre-College Representative; Helen Briggs of Lenoir-Rhyne, Vice-President; and Karl Mamola of Appalachian State, Section Representative.

 

8.      Drawings for prizes:  Several prizes, compliments of our sponsors, were distributed to holders of the lucky tickets.  Coffee and snacks were provided by donations from our sponsors.  See the list of sponsors in the program and remember to thank them.

 

9.      Adjourn:  Meeting went a little overtime and adjournment was spontaneous.
