EXECUTIVE COUNCIL MINUTES

The first business meeting of the newly‑elected officers was called to order at approximately 1:55pm by Clifton Bob Clark, the newly‑elected president.

1.   The following members were in attendance: Hildelisa Hernandez, Karl Mamola, Bob Clark, John Hubisz, Dick Patty, Hugh Haskell, Aaron McAlexander, Rex Adelberger, David Craven, Gordon Sheperd, Richard Mazak, and several others.  (Terri McMurray had

a previous commitment at the NSTA Meeting.)

2.   The secretary‑treasurer was unanimously directed to notify the      secretary‑treasurer of SACS‑AAPT of our meeting, the names of the new officers, and request that SACS‑AAPT release funds that they are holding from dues paid for membership in NCS‑AAPT.

3.   The secretary‑treasurer was unanimously authorized to reimburse John Hubisz for monies paid for student best paper prizes and the best pedagogical paper.

4.   The secretary‑treasurer was unanimously directed to send letters of thanks to the hosts, exhibitors, guests, and speakers for making the meeting such a success.

5., 6., & 7.  Considerable discussion was held over the locations of future meetings.  It was agreed that the general pattern would be to go east‑west, east‑west to ensure reasonable travel time and cost for all members.  It was agreed that a conscious effort be made to avoid conflicts with SACS‑AAPT, SESAPS, and NSTA (local) meetings.  It was agreed that joint meetings with SACS-AAPT be encouraged by placing meetings at easy to reach locations for members of both Sections.

After much discussion the First Annual Fall Meeting of the North Carolina Section was set to be held at Guilford College with support from other local schools.  Rex Adelberger will be the host and local contact person.  A meeting time could not be decided upon.  It was left to the host to set a date that fitted local events and as far as possible not conflict with other physics meetings.  (LATE NOTE: IN JUNE IT WAS DETERMINED THAT NOVEMBER 1‑2 WAS THE BEST DATE.  IT IS UNFORTUNATE THAT WE BEGIN WITH A CONFLICT WITH THE FALL SACS‑AAPT MEETING AT NORTH GEORGIA COLLEGE.)  Locations for future meetings (UPDATED AND NOT FIXED IN CONCRETE) include:

8.   The treasurer's report indicated that there would be over $1000 coming from SACS‑AAPT for memberships paid by NCS‑AAPT members.  We are also in the process of applying for exemption status under Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3) which will then enable donors to NCS‑AAPT to claim their gifts on their income tax returns.  An interest‑bearing checking account will be set up on receipt of monies from SACS‑AAPT.

9.   We were reminded by the president that there are two standing committees called for in the Constitution: The Nominating Committee and the Awards Committee.  At present that means that Richard Patty and three representatives will be responsible for nominating the next slate of officers (Vice President and 4‑Year College/University Member‑at‑Large) and Walter Connolly and Karl Mamola will be responsible for any awards.

It was suggested that the Constitution be placed on the WEB.

10.  The meeting was adjourned at 2:25pm.
