Minutes

for the

7th Annual Fall Meeting

UNC - Asheville

Asheville NC

November 2, 2002

1.    Roll Call: Mamola, Wessell, Kolena, Wetli, Tiwari, Stone, Briggs, C. Bennett, plus many members including SACS folks.

2.    The Minutes of the Spring 2002 Meeting at Forsyth Technical Community College were accepted as presented on a motion from Mamola, seconded by Creason.

3.    The Treasurer’s Report was accepted as presented on a motion from C. Bennett, seconded by Creason.

4.    Report from the High School Representative, Terri McMurray.  Nothing to report.

5.    Report from the Four-Year College/University Representative, Rajive Tiwari.  We were reminded of the award for best undergraduate student, the listserv for the group, and the possibilities for guest speakers from several sources.

6.    Report from the Two-Year College Representative, Chuck Stone.  Chuck has been newly elected as the Two-Year College Representative to the National AAPT.  The TYC folks are still discussing the Southern Association’s requirement that astronomy teachers have 18 hours of astronomy.  The National AAPT has drafted a letter that will be sent on behalf of any physics teacher who teaches astronomy and does not have 18 hours.  It shows the support of the AAPT and various astronomy groups as well as indicates the practice at four-year schools and universities.  The woman who plays Madame Curie is coming to town and her show is strongly recommended.

7.    Report from the Section Representative, Hugh Haskell.  Most of the news has already been made available.  Remember that you can get half price NEW membership in the national AAPT if you are a member of a Section of AAPT.

8.    Report of the Awards Committee, Hugh Haskell.  Nothing to report.

9.    New Business

a.     Discussion on items coming out of the Minutes.  None.

b.     Discussion on meeting with SESAPS in Wilmington in November 2003.  This meeting is on.  We will meet November 6-8, 2003, in Wilmington.  SPS is on board as well and possibly SACS.

c.     Discussion on including the health sciences group’s meeting in Asheville.  The new leadership failed to follow through so both groups ended up meeting in Asheville at the same time, but separately.  The newer leadership has contacted me about meeting in Wilmington this Fall.

d.     Nominations for Vice-President, Section Representative (Hugh Haskell has been nominated and has agreed to serve if elected), and Four-Year College/University Representative.  Mario Belloni has also been nominated for Section Representative as well.  We need nominations for the other two positions.

e.     Further business, reports, or announcements?  There are grants for schools with traveling vans with physics demonstrations.  University of Pittsburgh, A&T, and Columbia have gotten them so far.

10.                       Drawing for door prizes.  Some of our supporters gave door prizes and some supported breakfast and some the coffee and doughnuts.  All are appreciated.  Thanks!

11.                       Adjourn.  The full report of the meeting was published in the “Announcer” and is on our web site.
