Minutes of the Joint Meeting of the NCS & SACS
October 13-14, 2000
USC Spartanburg, SC

  1. Helen Briggs, President-elect, brought the meeting to order. Roll Call:Briggs, Wetli, and nine other members. Bennett, Haskell, Hubisz, Ramakrishnan, Tiwari, McAlexander (excused absences).

  2. New members seeking to join: Ken Krebs from Davidson College and Tatlock Lauten, a current student at UNC Greensboro. Instructions were given for them to obtain application information from the NCSU's web page.

  3. Minutes from the Spring 2000 meeting at Davidson were distributed and approved by motions from Bryant and Wicker.

  4. The Treasurer's Report was distributed and approved by motions from Shepard and Stone.

  5. There were no reports from the High School, Four-Year College/University, or Two-Year College representatives.

  6. Wetli read the Section Representative's Report for Hugh Haskell. Information for upcoming national AAPT meetings and a reminder to check the Announcer for more details was provided. Hugh noted the events of the February 2000 Physics Department Chairs conference and plans for a future conference regarding Calculus-Based Introductory Physics that will be publicized in the Announcer. AAPT is working on creating "primary liaisons" with each college/university physics department in the country. Anyone interested in becoming a liaison for his or her department should contact AAPT. AAPT is also seeking to increase physics representation at NSTA conferences and would like ideas regarding AAPT-sponsored days at regional and national NSTA meetings.

  7. No report was available for the Awards Committee.

  8. Mario Belloni announced that Davidson College is negotiating with PASCO to offer a workshop on Saturday, November 18. The workshop is targeted for high school teachers and will provide renewal credits upon completion of a follow-up workshop later. Inquiries should be made to Mario at Davidson regarding information and registration.
  9. The Spring 2001 Meeting will be held March 16-17 at the North Carolina School of Science & Mathematics in Durham.

  10. Adjournment on motion from Wetli.
*Mary Creason did not attend the business meeting but later inquired as to meeting dates and times for future NCS-AAPT meetings. A note was made to discuss this at the Spring meeting.
