Highlights
Thomas
D. Rossing, former president of AAPT, author of sound texts, will present
a popular lecture on Friday evening at 7:30 entitled "Acoustics of Eastern
and Western Bells: Old and New" and on Saturday morning, "Magnetic Levitation
and Its Applications."
Two workshops
are already planned with others pending: "Project STAR" by Joe Heafner
(Bring scissors and scotch tape.) and "Seven Inexpensive Ways to Make
Your Classroom Interactive" by John Hubisz.
John Kolena
will present "An Overview of Astronomy Image Processing Software," John
Hubisz will present "An Overview of Active Physics" and Eric
Carlson, founding father of the Triad Skeptics group, will speak on
this new group's activities.

Mailing Label
If your
mailing label is dated "1999" or greater then your dues are paid until
April 30, 1999, and you are in our good graces. If not, please send
a cheque for $5.00 per year to bring your membership up-to-date and
help ensure the viability of the Section.
Awards
Last Fall
Meeting, Sarah Baxter of UNC-A won the $100 prize for the best undergraduate
student paper and Donald Collins won the $150 towards expenses to present
a similar paper at a national meeting suitably noting the support of
the NCS-AAPT. As there will be prizes for the best undergraduate student
paper, the best graduate student paper, and the best pedagogical paper,
please keep notes and make recommendations to any section officer to
aid in their choice.
Karl Mamola
(Have you seen his book?) is chairman of the Awards Committee and has
several candidates nominated for the Walter C. Connolly Award ("An award
to recognize outstanding pre-college teachers in the Section.") We thank
our sponsors for contributing to support these awards.

Vonnie
Hicks did not find California to his liking and has returned to NC.
He may be looking for a teaching position in a high school. Contact

I heard
on the radio that the NCSSM finally dedicated their new building! Next

Nominations
Nominations
for the positions of Section Representative, Vice-President, and Pre-College
Member-at-Large are being sought for the election at this meeting. Karl
Mamola has been nominated for the position of Section Representative.
Helen Briggs has been nominated for Vice-President and John Kolena has
been nominated for the position of Pre-College Member-at-Large.
Pre-Registration
Pre-registration
(Fill in the form included with this mailing!) is always important,
but at this meeting it is very important. We must know early, roughly
how many will be in attendance. Even if you do not take advantage of
early registration please send a note to the secretary-treasurer that
you intend to be at the meeting. Registration costs at the meeting will
be higher! If you wish to sign up for a workshop do so early. If you
wish to be notified of workshops that are pending (TI & Vernier)
say so on your pre-registration form.

Rooms
& Local Arrangements
The opening
session Friday evening will be in Greene Hall Auditorium, Room 139.
This will be followed by an Ice Cream Social in Rooms 112 & 113,
Greene Hall.
The Saturday
program will be held in the Ardmore Building, beginning with a Continental
Breakfast. Sessions will be held throughout the building.
Lunch will
be catered by Mrs. Pumpkin's Muffins in the cafeteria and consist of
assorted box lunches with a choice of beverage.
