SESAPS and specific SPS abstracts should go to the organizers of those parts of the program.

 

Meeting Highlights

At present our guest speakers for Saturday are David McIlroy from the University of Idaho who will speak on building nanosprings, Lisa Grable of NC State who will speak on preparing teachers in the light of No Child Left Behind and related matters, Joe Hamilton of Vanderbilt who will present a paper similar to his "The Importance and Methodology of Teaching Physics to Non-Science Students" which he presented at the VIII International conference on Physics Education held in Havana, Cuba, in July 2003, Mary Creason who will present "Teaching Kinematics using a Case Study on Baseball Bats", Harlan Devore presenting "Interactive Excel for the Science Classroom", Wolfgang Christian presnting "General Relativity Simulations Using Open Source Physics", Rajive Tiwari presenting "Fr. Eugene Lafont: A Pioneer of Physics Education in India", and Arthur Bryant who will be presenting a workshop on demonstrations. There are also several other papers from the SESAPS Program that should be of interest

Saturday Afternoon Workshops

Please see the conference website for details.  The following workshop titles have been submitted so far:

Arthur Bryant and Jeanne Morse and two high school students will present six demonstrations.

Awards

There is a $100 prize for the best undergraduate student paper, a $100 prize for the best graduate student paper, and a prize of $150 towards expenses to present a similar paper at a national meeting suitably noting the support of the NCS-AAPT for the best pedagogical paper.  Last spring, Ji-Seon Park won the $100 prize for the best undergraduate student paper and Michael Paesler won the $150 prize for the best pedagogical paper.  Please keep notes and make recommendations at this meeting to any section officer to aid in the choice of winners. Many SPS papers will be presented in the SESAPS Sessions so pay particular attention to them.

Dues

If the date next to your name on the envelope is from the last century and you do not renew your dues by December 31, 2003, your file entry will be deleted. If it does not read 2004, please send a cheque for $5 per year or $100 for a lifetime membership.

Notes

The Spring 2004 Meeting will be held at Meredith College in Raleigh on March 26-27 hosted by Bill Schmidt.

The Fall 2004 Meeting will be held at Davidson College.

The first 100 registrants for this meeting will get a free PIRA CD.
