!!! Call for Papers !!!
6th Annual Fall Meeting

Carteret Community College
Morehead City, NC 2
October 12-13, 2001

Deadline: October 5, 2001

Highlights

Bob Friedhoffer, City University of New York – CASE, (212)794-9654, scienctrix@aol.com, will speak on “The Science of Magic and Magic in the Science Classroom” Friday evening at 7:30.  Bob’s approach is to perform a trick, request an explanation from the audience, and then reveal his secret.  The secret always involves a scientific principle, so that the audience learns some science in an unconventional format.  He is the author of several award-winning books on the topic.  Check out his Web site at http://hometown.aol.com/scienctrix/page4.html

There will be a social hour following Bob Friedhoffer's presentation with ice cream and fixings.  The Two-Year College group will meet shortly after.

On Saturday morning at 10:00 Jackie Krim of North Carolina State University’s Physics Department will speak on “Physics and Friction”.  See the cover story  “Friction at the Atomic Scale” by Jacqueline Krim in Scientific American 275 (4) 74-80 (October 1996.)  Much of what you think that you know about friction may be in jeopardy!

Bob Tyndall will present the latest version of the Texas PEPTYC program.  A new cycle will start this summer and applications are being sought.

Chuck Stone worked with three students this past summer (Sam Hendrix and Alexandria Caesar from Forsyth Tech, and Kelly Nicely from Carteret Community College) to develop project ideas that explored the scientific and cultural aspects of the bicycle.  Sam and Kelly will present their Bicycle Projects.  Sam went to Germany and did a project on mountain bike suspension systems, while Kelly went to Greece and did a project on energy and the bicycle.

The president of the national AAPT will also be in attendance and willing to answer questions.

Send your papers in soon so we can get things together for the program.  Encourage your students to attend and present a paper to both gain experience and perhaps win a prize.

Tidbits

The North Carolina Health Physics folks would like to have a joint meeting with us. Their meetings are in Wilmington in the Spring and Asheville in the Fall. They usually meet in a hotel. All comments about arranging such a meeting, please contact me as soon as possible. It should be on the agenda at Carteret.

The Southern Atlantic Coast Section of the AAPT meets at Coastal Georgia Community College in Brunswick, GA, on October 12-13, 2001.  For other information contact maasha@bc9000.bc.peachnet.edu or try http://astro.physics.sc.edu/SACS/home.html It is regrettable that SACS chose the same weekend, but we can expect an occasional conflict.

Nominations

Nominations for the positions of the High School Representative and Vice-President are being sought for the election at the Spring 2002 Meeting.
