Physics Class Registration FAQ Answers

  • How do I add a section of class that is closed?
If the section is showing as closed, there are no seats available. Physics makes all of the seats in each room available for registration and then schedules enough lab sections to cover.

  • The class shows as closed online but I saw empty seats, can I still add?
No. If the class shows as full, then all the seats in the room have been assigned. Physics does not remove students from the roll if they do not show up to class. The class will remain closed until somebody drops.

  • Why can't I change sections online after open enrollment?
To change sections, you have to use the SWAP feature. This actually drops you from your current section and then tries to add you to the new one. After 5 days of class, you are no longer allowed to add a class without departmental permission. Switching sections after 5 days is the same as adding.

  • Why are all of the labs full when you have open seats in the class?
If there are open seats in the class, there are open seats in the lab. The enrollment screen only shows about 5 labs at the time. There is a next button at the bottom of the list of labs. Select it and you will see the next group of approximately 5 labs. Continue doing this until you have seen all the labs.

  • The system says I need departmental approval. Who can give that to me?
You will need to have permission from the instructor of the course. If they agree, ask them to give you "written" permission or ask them to email Keith Warren. Then contact Keith Warren for assistance on adding the class. NOTE: even with instructor permission to add a class, you must sign up for an OPEN section of labs. We do not overload labs for any reason.

  • Are there wait lists for physics classes?
No. Presently the wait list feature does not work well with courses that have labs. Until this is resolved, physics will not have wait lists.

  • Where can I get help with my physics homework?
The Physics Department operates tutoring services in Riddick Hall. Please visit the Physics Tutorial Services web page for more information.

  • How do I document an illness so I can make up missed class work?
There is a university wide policy on excused absences. Please review the most current policy.
